In 1874, Frederick married Ida Marie Honoroé, daughter of a wealthy real estate tycoon in Chicago. Frederick was accused of participating in harassing Smith. He was allegedly involved in a controversy and endured intense discrimination and violence towards the first African American cadet, James Webster Smith. He also attended the military academy in West Point. Because Frederick was still recovering from his injury, he contracted typhoid fever while in the Union camp. He endured a painful infection that could have amputated his leg, but the doctors could prevent it and save his leg. During the Siege of Vicksburg, he was shot in the leg by a Confederate sniper.
